21in x 19in x 12in

Ceramic, Red Iron Oxide wash

Inspired by wet drapery techniques from classical and Hellenistic Greek sculpture, this piece explores how anxiety, claustrophobia, and self image can manifest tension, physical discomforts and even pain.

This piece was sculpted solid from 175 pounds of white stoneware. I then cut it apart, hollowed the pieces, and put it back together to allow for even drying and firing. When moving around this piece, I want the viewer to think about both the physical and psychological unrest that pairs with having overwhelming emotions fill us up. The front of this piece depicts a more concrete wriggling body trapped in a layer of skin, while the back transforms into an array of trapped figures that, to me, signify a haunting emotional experience that is more often felt than seen.

Please email me if you would to see this piece in person or schedule a local pickup.
